Published Fri 10 Jan 2025

LIWA Aquatics is thrilled to celebrate the commencement of construction on the Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre in Perth’s north, a significant milestone for the City of Wanneroo and the surrounding communities. The centre's groundbreaking event, attended by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Federal Member for Pearce Tracey Roberts, and Mayor of Wanneroo Linda Aitken, marks the beginning of a project that promises to enrich community life for years to come.

The Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre is poised to become a cornerstone of the Northern Coastal Growth Corridor, addressing the increasing need for state-of-the-art community infrastructure in this rapidly growing region. With a total investment of nearly $88 million, including contributions from the Albanese Government, the Cook Government, and the City of Wanneroo, this facility embodies a collaborative effort to enhance the quality of life for residents.

Prime Minister Albanese emphasized the project's role in fostering strong, connected communities, stating, “Building Australia’s Future is about so much more than bricks and mortar. It is about creating a better life for Australians. Projects like this create communities.”

The comprehensive facility will feature:
•    Three indoor pools, including a learn-to-swim and leisure pool
•    An outdoor 50-meter competition pool
•    Health suite with spa, sauna, and steam room
•    Multi-use indoor sports courts with spectator seating
•    Gymnasium and fitness suite
•    Cafeteria and occasional childcare space
•    Community meeting and consulting rooms

Travis Doye, Acting Executive Officer of LIWA Aquatics, shared his enthusiasm for the project, noting the vital role local swimming pools play in promoting healthy lifestyles. “The Alkimos Aquatic Centre will drive improved health outcomes through aquatic recreational activities and provide invaluable opportunities for social connectedness and physical fitness,” said Doye. “It will also bolster employment opportunities within the industry.”
As the community eagerly anticipates the centre's completion, LIWA Aquatics extends its best wishes to the City of Wanneroo for a successful build and looks forward to the grand opening day. The Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre promises to be a vibrant hub for recreation, learning, and community engagement, enhancing the lives of all who visit.
