Tony has left the building, well not exactly, but he is semi-retiring.

Hi my name is Steve Good,  I have been appointed the new Exeuctive Officer of LIWA Aquatics,  whilst most of you will know who I am, for those who don't here is a little bit about myself.

Steve Profile PhotoI started in the aquatic industry completing my Cert IV Health & Fitness qualification at Central TAFE in 2000.  I came to a fork in the road and had to decide to be a Gym instructor (which seemed to be a flooded market) or venture down the aquatic path as an Aquarobics instructor, Pool Lifeguard and Austswim Teacher.  Guess what river I paddled down.  After completing my qualification I became a regular Aquarobic Instructor and Lifeguard at Aquamotion in Wanneroo and Arena Joondalup.  An yes the body has changed shape since those days.

After about 6 months of doing this I was offered the opportunity to complete the Pool Operations Course in which I jumped in with both feet.   It goes without saying that this was the best career decision I have ever made.  Far better decision than turning down an offer to go to South Sydney to join the NRL.  Funny about waiting for a better offer.  Sometimes they come, sometimes they don't.

I completed the Pool Operations course with Tony Head being my course trainer at the time and then my ongoing mentor to this day.

In 2002 I was talking with Tony about the website he had created for LIWA Aquatics and basically told him it was crap and offered to produce a better one for him in which he agreed.  In 2003 I was nominated to join LIWA Aquatics board (I think mainly to utilise my IT Skills, which were probably only slightly better than the rest of the board members at the time) and have been on the board ever since.

In 2005 and 2009 I was awarded the Presidents Award (First by Tony Head the second president Jeff Fondacaro).  I had worked at Aquamotion Wanneroo and Arena Joondalup as the Aquatic Supervisor for 11 years before moving to join Royal Life Saving WA as a Traineeship Officer and First Aid Trainer in 2011.

Lifeguard Training Saudi Arabia 2016In 2012 I was apointed the position of managing the training department of Royal Life Saving and began my adventures of travelling WA training lifeguards and pool operators and then overseas in the Middle East.  My most challenging aspect of training was travelling to Saudi Arabia on 2 occasions to train lifeguards in the desert.  It was long hours (16 hour days) , long distances travelling through the desert and no not by camel but still just as gruelling,  we managed to train over 50 lifeguards throughout the Kingdom over 5 weeks and trained 2 Pool Lifeguard Trainers to continue the work.

PDO LifeguardsSince 2013 I have travelled to Muscat, Oman via Dubai every year to continue training and assessing their lifegaurd team at the Petroleum Development of Oman (PDO) Recreation facility.  This has been very rewarding and have formed a great bond with this team which continue to improve and grow each year to ensure the patrons of the facilities are in safe hands.

Back on home soil, LIWA and Royal Life Saving has had me travelling to many remote locations around WA, from Warburton and Ayers Rock (Ulura), Kunnurra to Albany, Christmas Island to Yalgoo and many places in between.

Now in 2018 I have begun a new chapter with LIWA Aquatics and hope to bring to the job the same passion and drive Tony had whilst in the position.  Whilst I may not be able to fill his shoes, I will be working closely with the LIWA Board, its keystake holders and its members to continue the great network we have here in WA and lead the way in the aquatic industry with such great intitiatives and programs such as Watch Around Water.

I look forward to see you all around pool deck, at Conference this year and at our 50th Anniverary of the Institute next year.
