Once again, the annual LIWA Aquatics Pool Lifeguard Challenge was conducted at HBF Stadium on a beautiful day in late February. A gentle breeze made for perfect conditions on the pool deck as 21 teams, yes that is right, 21 teams got involved in both the fun and serious side of the competition.

As members are aware in 2016/17 the “Watch Me Not Your Phone” messages were rolled out to industry across Western Australia as a highly emotive form of prompting parents/guardians to put down their phones and watch their children. Posters were sent to all WA facilities and it was great to see how well they were received and their prominent placement in our pools.

The City of Cockburn hosted the 2017 launch of Watch Around Water. it was only fitting we promoted not only WAW and WAW Week but showcased one of the best examples of a contemporary aquatic recreation facilities ever built in Australia. We were joined by LIWA Aquatics President Mr Jeff Fondacaro, LIWA Board Members and industry members as well as Steve Rasdell and George Lech from our new program partners Ixom.

The World Conference on Drowning Prevention was recently held from 17 to 20 October in Vancouver and I represented LIWA Aquatics along with Lauren Nimmo RLSSWA Senior Manager.
Did you know that every hour of every day 40 people lose their lives to drowning and this does not include natural disasters nor boating accident which stand at 360,000 downing deaths each year? * Eight hundred delegates from 60 countries came together to exchange ideas on reducing death and injury in aquatic environments with the theme: Share Globally, Prevent Locally.
